Gilmour is a 6 year old, male entire, Italian Spinone who presented with a 48 hour history of pyrexia (high temperature), head shaking, right sided head tilt and facial pain to his right jaw. He has previously undergone bi-lateral total ear canal ablation surgery at a previous vets.

A CT scan was performed which identified severe inflammation to his right middle and inner ear and abs cessation to his right tymphanic cavity which extended through to the right pterygoid muscles of his jaw and soft tissue structures present within his right epitympanic recess. The left side shows no evidence of complication after previous total ear canal ablation surgery. A ventral bulla Osteotomy was advised.

Gilmour’s owners elected to proceed with the ventral bulla osteotomy surgery. A incision was made on the underside of his neck, the bulla was exposed and opened, the lining of the bulla was removed and remaining soft tissue structures removed from the epitympanic recess and the area was flushed with saline. Gilmour received expert anaesthetic care from our anaesthetist Chris Seymour throughout his operation and recovered from the procedure without any significant complications and was discharged a couple of days later and has since made a full recovery.
